From June, Malaysia will substantially raise the minimum salary threshold for expatriate Employment Pass (EP) holders, effectively doubling the required pay. The move is intended to push employers to hire more local workers for white-collar roles and reduce reliance on foreign labour.

The policy aims to open up job pathways and improve wages for Malaysian citizens who face low pay and shrinking opportunities. However, the announcement has unsettled expatriates and prompted concern among some firms about a smaller available talent pool and potential hiring challenges.
